How to use User Manager in cPanel

Last updated on Apr 08, 2024

The User Manager in cPanel simplifies managing your web hosting account's FTP, Email, and Web Disk users. It consolidates account management into a single interface, streamlining the process of adding new users, editing existing ones, and managing their access. Here’s how you can efficiently use the User Manager in cPanel on Hostyt, whether you’re operating under shared hosting, VPS, or Dedicated Server environments.

Managing Subaccounts with User Manager

Adding a Subaccount

  1. Access User Manager: Log in to cPanel, navigate to Preferences, and select User Manager.

  2. Create a New User: Click “Add User” and fill in the necessary user information, including Full Name, Username, Domain, and Contact Email Address. This email will receive account notifications and password reset confirmations.

  3. Set Password: Choose between letting the system set the password or manually setting it.

  4. Finalize Account Creation: Click “Create” to finish or “Create and Add Another User” to continue adding accounts.

  5. Enable Services: Decide which services (Email, FTP, Web Disk) the Subaccount should have access to.

Subaccount Services

  • Email: Set up an email address for the Subaccount and define a quota for email storage.

  • FTP: Manage website files with an FTP account, setting space quotas and specifying the home directory.

  • Web Disk: Offers file management across multiple devices with permission settings to define access levels.

Linking Existing Accounts

If a Subaccount username matches an existing service account, you can link them directly or choose to keep them separate.

Accessing Subaccounts

  • Webmail: Log in via domainname:2096 or the server-specific URL, using the Subaccount credentials.

  • FTP: Utilize an FTP client like FileZilla, inputting the host IP, user (formatted as username@domainname), and password.

  • Web Disk: Connect through a third-party client or your operating system, following specific configuration instructions for Windows if necessary.

Editing Subaccounts

To edit a Subaccount, click “Edit” under the chosen user, where you can modify their name, contact email, security information, and service access.

Deleting Subaccounts

Select “Delete” and confirm your choice. This action removes all services associated with the Subaccount.

Practical Tips for Hostyt Users

  • Digest Authentication: For Windows users (Vista and onwards), enabling Digest Authentication is necessary for unencrypted Web Disk access, unless the domain employs a signed SSL certificate.

  • Service Quotas: Carefully consider the quotas assigned to each Subaccount to ensure efficient resource use across your hosting plan.

  • Security Best Practices: Regularly update Subaccount passwords and monitor access to maintain security, especially important for VPS and Dedicated Server environments where administrative access provides broader control over the server.

By leveraging the User Manager in cPanel, Hostyt users can effectively manage the various aspects of their hosting accounts, ensuring seamless operation and optimized resource use across their web properties.
