Do we Support Wildcard Subdomains

Last updated on Apr 08, 2024

Hostyt is pleased to support wildcard DNS for subdomains, enabling a wide range of functionalities for your websites.

Understanding Wildcard Subdomains

Wildcard subdomains (or Wildcard DNS) are a powerful feature that automatically directs all existing and non-existing subdomains of your domain to a specified directory within your cPanel account. This feature is particularly useful for running multisite web applications (like WordPress multisite), facilitating quicker DNS propagation, and ensuring uniform content across your main website and its subdomains.

For instance, with a wildcard subdomain set up for your account, accessing any subdomain of your site, whether it exists like admin.testing.com or is non-existent like support.testing.com, will display the same content. A wildcard subdomain is denoted by an asterisk * in the domain name, such as *.testing.com, and is only available for domains with DNS hosted with us and pointed to our nameservers.

Creating a Wildcard Subdomain

To establish a wildcard subdomain:

  1. Log into your cPanel.

  2. Navigate to the "Domains" section and select "Domains".

  3. Click on "Create A New Domain".

  4. In the subdomain field, enter an asterisk * to indicate the creation of a wildcard subdomain. The system will automatically suggest a path for this subdomain, which you can modify by specifying a different Document Root.

  5. After submission, a confirmation message will appear, indicating the successful setup of your wildcard subdomain.

The system automatically updates your domain’s DNS entry to include this new record, facilitating the resolution of any correctly formed subdomain under your main domain. Note that DNS propagation may take a few hours.

Should the root domain’s DNS not be managed by Hostyt’s cPanel server, you'll need to manually add the wildcard subdomains' A record to the DNS zone managed by the root domain's DNS server.
